Wacky Writing Project One

 

 On September 9, I assigned our first Wacky Writing Project for the year. Students were given an opportunity to choose 5 words and were asked to define each word and figure out it's part of speech. Students then were to complete a rough draft of their story including those 5 words in their writing. Once a game plan is established, they use the manilla paper to present their final draft. Students always love this assignment and I always enjoy reading their fun stories! This project is due on September 30. Students have a total of 3 weeks to get this accomplished. If the student turns in their project prior to the due date, they can potentially earn up to 20 points extra credit. I greatly encourage parents to work on this with your student. This is a great way to help them with school and show them creative ways to write.

Perfecting the Spelling Packet Prompts

If you still have your student's spelling packet for this week, take a glimpse at their Writing Prompt section. Hopefully you will see something similar to this. Each week we, as a class, generate our own class story response to the prompt. Their stories should be different from what I have posted below- however- you should see similar "scribbles" around their writing to show their thought process and planning before they wrote. A couple of ways you can help your student on this section is:

1. Make sure they wrote their 4 spelling words to the side of their paper and underlined their words in the story.
2. Make sure they thought about their writing before they ever started to write.
3. Make sure they fully write about what the prompt is asking them to write about (stay on topic).
4. Make sure they have written more than 4 lines- because they need at least that to get their point across.

*Feel free to assist your student with this portion, I encourage that. The more you show interest and importance in writing, the more they will respect and appreciate it. Modeling the writing process is one of the key ingredients to a successful writer!!! Don't worry about getting too technical with this particular assignment each week.What you see in the photos below is a rough draft and at a later time students will have the opportunity to improve on these papers.

This week students will be using their knowledge of nouns and verbs and applying it to new terminology- subjects and predicates. Your subject is the noun and your predicate is the verb. Every complete sentence must have both. Here is a fun video for them to watch and remember the difference between the two!

Chalk Spelling

This week grab some left over chalk from this summer and head outside to the sidewalk. Have your students practice writing their spelling words on the sidewalk. To add an even deeper challenge have your students draw a picture of the spelling word or write a sentence with the spelling word in it!
