Money Spelling!

Use the above chart to figure out how much money your word is worth! Write down your spelling word, then write down the coin values beside the word. At the end add up your coin value. Which word was worth the most? Which word was worth the least? Do any of the words have the same value? Be sure to record all of the information on your sheet.

Using our Writer's Eyes!

This six weeks we have really been honing in on our editing skills. Students who have published at least three of their own papers get to become student editors and now get to revise/edit their peer's papers. This has been an exciting experience for the editors because this is an "honor" earned, they get to choose the papers from here on out that they personally get to publish, they get their name on the wall AND get to wear cool editing glasses while they edit the papers. By wearing the glasses it shows others that they are working and are not to be bothered, as well as, the glasses make editing papers just a little bit more fun! :) Check out some of our student editors in action!!!

Sweet Tooth Spelling

With Valentine's Day coming up what better way than to use all of that candy to practice your spelling with? Use your pieces of candy to spell out words like the above picture or grab some Twizzlers Pull and Peels or Sour Straws. Peel them apart and make your spelling words with them.

OR if you happen to have chocolate syrup lying around.....bust it out and put some on a cookie sheet and line it with wax paper, foil or regular paper. Use your fingers to spell out your words. When you are done, clean up....and don't forget to lick those fingers! Yum!

OR break out the pixie sticks or fun dip and practice writing out your words in the pile of sugar before you.

Who knew spelling could taste so good?

Tune Tuesdays

Today we started "Tune Tuesday". Even though today is Monday, my class will be gone tomorrow on a field trip. This is an idea I read about awhile back and have been trying to figure out how to implement it into our class. Everyone knows that the Spring Semester is a time for hard core prep for the STAAR- no fun allowed. :) ha ha. Well, I can't help but try to add SOMETHING fun into the day that is also productive! Prior to the Christmas break for three weeks my students daily completed a "sentence diagramming" activity with a single sentence. We mainly focused on identifying nouns and simple subjects. Well I wanted to spice it up, but still maintain the same concept. So, hence "Tune Tuesday". Every week we will have a new tune to listen to. Students will have a copy of the lyrics and a mission of what to highlight while the song is playing. For instance, today's tune was "Eye of the Tiger" -old school version not Katy Perry. ;) While the song played the students went through and highlighted all of the pronouns they saw. After the song was finished I gave them an additional 30 seconds of silence to check their work, then we graded it as a class. It was a nice change of pace and the students are already asking me what song will be next week.

So.....want to practice your pronoun identification? Glance at the lyrics below and see how many pronouns you can find!

Conclusions - The Dyna-Write Ending -Uncle Chris

Imagination Exploration- Uncle Chris

Vivid Verbs Lesson- Uncle Chris

A visit from Uncle Chris!

This past Thursday and Friday our 4th grade students recently received a fun visit from “Uncle Chris”. Students attended two hour long workshops each day on Thursday and Friday. These workshops assisted the boys and girls in the brainstorming process, with hooking introductions, writing “dyno-write” conclusions, making their sentences more detailed and so much more. The students loved every minute of each of the workshops and have a new spark when working on their writing. For more information about "Uncle Chris" be sure to visit his website! http://www.thestorywindow.com/
